Love at First Listen - Chikita Violenta's "Roni"
Have you ever had a new song get so deeply engrained in your mind that you actually long to hear it, over and over? Its more than a subconscious earworme. Its a driving need to hear it. Chikita Violenta's song "Roni" is having that effect on me now.
While listening to my iPod on Shuffle recently, a drum beat emanated from my speakers followed by a heavily muddied and distorted guitar riff, completely unfamiliar, but intriguing. Longing, aching vocals followed. And then the chorus kicked in and I was hooked. Please, take a listen before reading further.
Funny thing was, I had no idea where this song had come from. I realized after a literal half dozen listens that it had to be from a free sampler, but a track heretofore unplayed. Love at first listen is the only way to describe the effect of this song. From the melody line to the hook-laden vocals "Roni" is one of those ever so rarer and rarer of songs that doesn't grow on the listener, but grabs receptive ears with its charms.
The guitar tones remind me of the ones played by Surfer Blood, with their overcast day at the beach sound. Buried in the mix but perceptible is a tambourine, complimenting the tribal rhythm. The tone of the vocalist's plaintive request to "don't go messing with my head tonight" in the chorus is the other of the song's strongest elements.
Having been unfamiliar with Chikita Violenta previously, it seems my ears may need to seek out more music from this band from Mexico City.
