Song Review - Genesis Chiptuned by Inverse Phase
"I might as well be listening to Genesis!" - Rik Mayall, The Young Ones
And so should you. Specifically, a new Chiptune cover of Genesis' Top 10 hit, "Land of Confusion," which is all kinds of brilliant.
Chiptune re-composer Inverse Phase revisits the later half of the 1980's with his latest cover; an era he explored previously with the lighters-held-aloft awesomeness of his chiptuned version of Whitesnake's "Is This Love". This time around, he manages to capture the zeitgeist of the waning years of the Reagan era on dual levels, by injecting the electronic sounds of the 80's gaming world into a song which was a pure byproduct of the times.
What is obvious about Inverse Phase's chip covers is he is doing them for the love of both the original and for the genre of electronic music he excels at. These are not slap dashed covers thrown together on a whim and regurgitated onto the web just because he can. There is real thought and effort being put into these songs with an attention to detail which includes giving a retrotastic sheen to each layer of the original instrumentation. Upon first listen, I realized Inverse Phase wasn't cutting corners for the sake of time, when I realized the song's pacing progressed identically to the original, even finishing within seconds of its actual running time.
Inverse Phase doesn't just do covers of 80's music either. Check out his Bandcamp page to explore his original material, including the soundtrack to the iOS/Mac game, Shuttle Scuttle.
