An Afternoon Run with DJ Shuffle

I didn't take up running as a New Year's resolution, I've actually been doing it for a while now. Of course the weather the past several weeks has been uncooperative, so today was the first day in several weeks that I've been able to get out for a "daily 5K" as I've dubbed them. My running partner is named DJ Shuffle, and I was definitely more motivated than they were.

DJ Shuffle provides the soundtrack to our running sessions. Sometimes I make a request and sometimes I let them spin what they feel. As this was also my first music listening session of the New Year, I figured I would let Shuffle handle the selection and we would continue pounding the pavement until the end of the 14th song. Here is what DJ Shuffle spun up.

1 Queen "Fat Bottomed Girls"
2 Rush "Here Again"
3 U2 "Numb"
4 Red Five "Low"
5 The Kinks "All Day And All of the Night"
6 No Doubt "One More Summer"
7 U2 "Tomorrow"
8 Bryan Ferry "You Can Dance"
9 Damn Yankees "High Enough"
10 Kodo "Echo Bells"
11 Joan Jett & The Blackhearts "Bombs Away"
12 Shiny Toy Guns "When Did This Storm Begin?"
13 Hanoi Rocks "Ice Cream Summer"
14 Queen "You're My Best Friend"

Clearly, I was more motivated to put on the running shoes than Shuffle was. The mix started off nicely with Queen, but apart from The Kinks and Joan Jett, this was a fairly moody set of music, filled with songs of lost love and summer ending.

DJ Shuffle is an interesting character. Sometimes they know exactly what I want to hear and other times they clearly spin based on the mood they are in. As a card carrying fan of TRON it is of course not hard to imagine DJ Shuffle wears black with neon trim and hangs out at the hottest clubs on the Grid when they are not spinning for my listening pleasure. Clearly, Shuffle was going through something.

Perhaps the Program of their affection, likely wearing a piercing white neon embellished outfit, didn't meet them for a planned night out on the Grid. By the end of the set though, Shuffle seemed to have turned things around. Good for them!

I've always been fascinated by the algorithms which run the random function on digital music interfaces. Sometimes they play exactly what you want to hear, or even what you need to hear in a given situation. And then there are times like these that the tiny DJ goes off on a thematic tangent. That said, I think for our next running session, I'm going to request what DJ Shuffle plays. This set was definitely not ideal for pushing oneself while exercising.
