Checking In To The Morrison Hotel

45 years ago today, The Doors released Morrison Hotel, what many considered at the time to be a comeback album. Featuring songs recorded over several years and released as the follow up to 1969's The Soft Parade, the album featured the radio staple "Roadhouse Blues" along with 10 other Doors' classics. Come inside and check out how the exterior featured on the album cover looks today, and find out how another Los Angeles-born band is filling in a missing piece of the Hotel legacy.

As the story goes, the band asked permission to shoot the album cover in the old Morrison Hotel located at 1246 South Hope Street in Los Angeles. When the owners said no, they surreptitiously took the now famous cover photo.

The hotel no longer exists and the building and neighborhood have definitely seen better days.

While Morrison Hotel contains some of the best examples of The Doors' music, it doesn't contain a title track. Well, technically it does, but it was for Waiting for the Sun, released nearly two years prior. As with the pictures of the titular lodging location above, that was then, and this is now. Turn up your speakers and press play while you are "Checking In to The Morrison Hotel".

This exceedingly creative take on The Doors comes from Los Angeles-based satiric rock band The Title Trackers' forthcoming debut album, Lost Title Tracks. I first learned about The Title Trackers nearly a year ago and have written about them previously. Expect to hear more from them when their brilliant debut drops on March 10th.
