Song Review - The Hobbit Song

We are still several months away from the release of the first of two films based on J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit", but the source material is already providing inspiration for fan-created tributes to it.

Truly though, "The Hobbit Song" goes far beyond the usual YouTube tribute, in part because it's an original song, but mostly because it is done so well.

Cossbysweater, the nom de tune of folkstress Allie Goertz, produced one of my favorite independently released songs of last year with her adorkably sweet number, "Tonight (DnD)". This time around, she gets a little help from her friend Megan Barrett and creates an original ode to one of the most beloved works of fiction ever written.

Where Cossbysweater one ups many of her YouTube/Bandcamp contemporaries lies in the fact she writes original material, and writes it well. While I love a good cover song dedicated to what some would consider nerdy subject matter, Allie Goertz has conjured a lovely little original song, told from the view points of both Bilbo Baggins and the wizard Gandalf (a very nice touch).

Tolkien as source material for music is of course nothing new, but Goertz' newest piece sounds very appropriate for both characters whom she and Barrett sing for, and proves that one does not need to be a Led Zeppelin, Blind Guardian or Rush to add their names to the music lore of Middle Earth.

Cossbysweater's music (though curiously not this newest track) is available via her bandcamp page. The downloads are pay-what-want donations, which go towards the recording of new songs.
