The crew of the airship HMS Ophelia is back with a brand new album, mere months after their most recent release. To celebrate, Abney Park, the preeminent purveyors of Steampunk music, are offering three free downloads of songs from their forthcoming album.
If you have never listened to Abney Park before, this is the perfect opportunity to let this utterly unique band into your mind. If you aren't familiar with the notion of "Steampunk", don't let that put you off either. It isn't punk rock at all, but something that you must experience for yourself and the aeronauts of questionable morals collectively known as Abney Park are the perfect band of begoggled bards to lead you on a new listening adventure.
The first free download from their upcoming release Ancient World is the album's opening track, "Steampunk Revolution". Click to listen or right click the link to download. The song is a lusciously languid affair, with a blend of World Music sounds, a Reggae-inspired melody bed and a beautifully greasy Speakeasy horn line that morphs into life directly from the opening violin. This is an aural amalgamation one is not simply going to happen upon every day.
The next track is "The Story That Never Starts". Leading in with a melancholic violin, the piece quickly picks up tempo, with intertwining accordion and violin melodies born out of Gypsy folk, accented by deftly placed electric guitar and Darbuka rhythms.
The third free download from Ancient World is an instrumental version of "Steampunk Revolution" which holds up fine even without the baritone vocals of Captain Robert to guide it, revealing the level of artistry that went into the instrumentation of the song.
These are free downloads offered by the band, so there is no reason not to click and save all three of them and embark on a new listening adventure with the members of Abney Park. You might just find your ears seduced by their singular sounds.
Ancient World is available for pre-order from Abney Park's website and drops on June 2nd.
