Proof that Rock 'n' Roll Ain't Dead - The Jim Jones Revue
If there is one thing which doesn't happen nearly enough in this world, it's discovering a new song which you fall madly in love with after the first listen. So hard in fact that you play it over and over immediately. Today a friend shared a song with me by The Jim Jones Revue and I went utterly, utterly mad for it. A full tilt, foot through the floor piece of literal Rock 'n' Roll. Come listen, but turn your speakers up to 11 first.
Having never heard of The Jim Jones Revue before today, here's the quick and dirty on them. Singer Jim Jones is the one and the same vocalist of Thee Hypnotics fame and while this UK band is described variously as garage rock with blues and punky tendancies, they are quite literally a killer throw back to the earliest days of Rock 'n' Roll. Their description can't be stated any better than the way The Guardian's music editor Michael Hann did: "the Jim Jones Revue imagine that rock'n'roll didn't really need to evolve after 1956; it just needed to get much, much louder, and wildly more distorted."
Exactly. Now listen.
Do you hear that? That is the sound forged by the original Rock 'n' Rollers, back when listening to and dancing to Rock 'n' Roll was dangerous. It doesn't matter if this album is a year old (its only just dropped Stateside a couple weeks ago!) this is the swift kick in the pants that music in the second decade of the 21st Century needs. Good, old (new) fashioned, Rock 'n' Roll.
Here is the live clip which my friend shared with me that got me hooked. As it is from a copyrighted David Letterman broadcast, your mileage may vary as to how long it remains up. By all means though, check out more music from The Jim Jones Revue on their Facebook page and on their corner of Blogger.
