War Tapes' New Track "Favorite Song" is My Current Favorite Song
Catalog this one under the heading "Love At First Listen", a rare occurrence and one which I will only write about equally as often. A previously unreleased track from War Tapes which released today has pulled off that increasingly hard feat: Grab my attention and become an instant earworm worthy of repeated listens.
The last time an original song occupied my ears with such an immediate effect was nearly a year ago when I first heard Chikita Violenta's "Roni". And once again, a wonderful blend of melody, lyric delivery and that certain magic, has delivered a song I've had on repeat today.
Hailing from Los Angeles, the music of War Tapes is self-described as "Heart-Quaking Doom Pop". Their sound may initially remind the listener of 80's bands who's love song will tear us apart in large amounts, but don't let that jade your opinion pre-listen. While that era and those artists may be in their sonic DNA, at its core, the music of War Tapes is something very original and should appeal to younger ears as well as those raised on gloomy odes to love born out of the Post-Punk era. Please take a few minutes to enjoy "Favorite Song".
There is such a great sentiment in the chorus, especially for music lovers, all backed by sweet hooks and a vocalist who doesn't sound like everyone else.
War Tapes were a band I missed seeing live by a few minutes (accursed LA traffic!) after winning tickets to the opening night of their 2009 tour with VNV Nation. Despite not seeing them play, I took a chance at the merch booth and bought their album The Continental Divide and self-titled EP, both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was very exciting to see them tweet again today after a nearly year-long absence from Twitter, to announce the release of "Favorite Song".
As you can see in the SoundCloud player above, the song is available as a free download. Click it, add War Tapes to your music listening device of choice and then by all means explore their catalog. You might find a new favorite song.
