Internet Music Star Team-Up: Miracle of Sound and Malukah
Music collaborations from uniquely paired duets to full-fledged supergroups which result in something special sounding happen all too infrequently. Less so often in the emerging music scene of the Internet. What we have here with the song "Legends of the Frost" is something that is not only a rare occurrence, but one that produced a magical result.
The YouTube singer known as Malukah has done exactly what I and what many of her fans (she has over 10.5 million views and nearly 80,000 subscribers on YouTube, so yes, she has fans) have been hoping for; performing an original piece of music based on the world of the videogame The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. After performing three incredible covers of music found within Skyrim, it only made sense for the angel-voiced bard to perform an original song. "Legends of the Frost" is a duet with fellow Internet music scenester, Miracle of Sound. Even if you have never heard of the game, take the two-plus minutes and listen to truly independently produced magic.
By combining the writing and production skills of Gavin "Miracle of Sound" Dunne with the hypnotic voice of Malukah, the duo have crafted a piece of music which is truly fitting to the game world of Skyrim. The instrumentation is spot on and the production solid enough that it wouldn't sound out of place were it heard within the game itself. There's is only one problem: it's the only track they've combined their talents on, so far. Now obviously crafting something this good doesn't happen as easily as combining magical reagents to create potions, but in all sincerity, here is hoping the two see enough success from this song to join forces again in the not-to-distant future.
If you are unfamiliar with Malukah's vocal talents, be sure to check out her covers of "The Dragonborn Comes", "The Age of Aggression" and "The Age of Oppression", which are bard songs featured in Skyrim.
If Miracle of Sound is new to your ears, I highly recommend you check out his nerdtastic musical odes to video games including Skyrim, Portal 2 and Mass Effect 3. What is most enjoyable about Dunne's songs is they are originals. For people (myself included) who spend far too much time in the world's of the games he sings about, his songs are instantly recognizable in the way they capture the spirit of each. It is like taking what Weird Al Yankovic does so masterfully with parody songs, but done in original form. The first time you hear a Miracle of Sound song, you get it immediately if you are fan of what he is singing about. Case in point, what can be best described as the best drinking song composed in tribute to a video game, "Nord Mead".
"Because when we raise our flagon to another dragon there is just one drink we need..." Brilliant
If "Legends of the Frost" is appealing to your ear, plunk down a septim ($1 in real world coin) and download it from Miracle of Sound's bandcamp page. Perhaps if these bards receive enough interest from their listeners, more rounds of Skyrimery sound will abound!
