Song Review - "The Crush" by Miracle of Sound, Inspired by Pacific Rim
August 10th, 2013... a day which should forever be remembered in movie lore as K-Day. The day the first kaiju came. Trespasser. Emerging from San Francisco Bay and wreaking havoc in its path. Six days and three cities later, it was finally taken down. But it was only the first of many kaiju. Thus began the Human-Kaiju War, detailed in the utterly fantastic movie, Pacific Rim. If you haven't seen it, I can not recommend highly enough that you step away from the Internet and go see it, right now. If you have seen it, click through and enjoy an original song inspired by the film, written and recorded by the artist known as Miracle of Sound.
Hit play on "The Crush" and feel the Drift...
Among the increasingly crowded fan-created music scene (or Geek Rock or Filk if you prefer) Miracle of Sound is an artist who stands head and shoulders above the rest (Jaeger-inspired pun very much intended). If you are unfamiliar with Gavin Dunne's rocking alter ego, get yourself over to his bandcamp page and feast your ears on original songs which regale the awesomeness and geekery of everything from Iron Man and Game of Thrones, to video games including Bioshock Infinite, Halo and the forthcoming Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
I have been a follower of Miracle of Sound's music talents for a while and his songs never cease to amaze and bring a smile to my face, especially when his works touch on a fandom of which I call myself a part of. There is something a bit different about "The Crush" though. Different in a very, very good way. With this song, Gavin has truly upped his game, especially lyrically. While some of his songs touch upon an aspect of the subject matter (a perfect example being the uproarious drinking song, "Nord Mead", based upon the Skyrim game) "The Crush" actually delves deeper into and expands upon the world-building of Pacific Rim's creators, resulting in an ideal drift of originality and familiarity.
If you loved the movie Pacific Rim, make this song a part of your listening library and put it on heavy rotation. For more nerdtastic musical adventures with Miracle of Sound, hoist the colors and haul together as you listen to "Beneath the Black Flag" (Assassin's Creed IV) or dare to go full nerd and check out Gavin's Level 1, Level 2 and Level III albums, featuring over 70 songs guaranteed to bring a huge smile to your face, especially if you are proud to let your geek flag fly.
