What is this Album August Thing @LinerNotes Keeps Tweeting About?

Album August is all about discovering new music; opening your ears to artists, genres and sounds you have never heard before or considered listening to. If you are a more recent or brand new follower of mine on Twitter, here is how Album August works.

Throughout August I will be live-tweeting album reviews in real-time via @LinerNotes on Twitter. “Review” isn’t really the best descriptor for it. It is far more appropriate to say each day will feature an album listening party, where you listen along and chime in with your thoughts and input. Think of it as radio without commercials, you get to interact and the DJ is tweeting instead of talking.

At the start of the listening session, I will send out a link to the featured album and a “synch up tweet” so that everyone who wants to listen hits play more or less simultaneously, and we end up listening as close together as possible (your mileage may vary). Each album slated for review is available as a free and legal stream, with the majority being available via bandcamp.

The live tweets will take place mostly in the evening, but I will be mixing up the times on weekends, so as to include more time zones. It is one world after all, and one world is enough, for all of us. There will be a wide variety of genres, some familiar, some not so familiar. What I invite you to do is to set aside any preconceived notions about genre and style. If arcane names like steampunk, chiptunes or hot jazz come up, I invite you to listen with an open ear to something you’ve never experienced before.

The albums I’ve selected for review, except for a small number, are not set in stone. If you know of something that is new/awesome/unique/(add your favorite adjective here), then absolutely tweet me about it! The only guideline is the album must be available as a legal stream, which the artist has made available. I welcome all suggestions, unless a band’s vocalist is doing a bad impersonation of Cookie Monster eating the microphone (okay, so that's two guidelines).

As of press time, each most albums I'm planning on reviewing are available to be streamed via bandcamp (a newly added artist has actually created an amazing cool, interactive playlist of their album on YouTube, complete with animated lyrics!). If after listening, you end up really getting into a particular album, I can’t encourage you enough to support the artists featured this month and purchase a download or physical copy from them through their bandcamp page or elsewhere.

Here is hoping you tune in to #AlbumAugust and perhaps your ears will be turned on to something new.

And now, back to the music!
