Throwback Thursday: Endless Ocean Soundtrack Review

This review was originally published at g4tv.com on March 31, 2008

One of the most striking things about the scuba-diving game Endless Ocean for the Nintendo Wii is the music that accompanies it. The lady behind that haunting voice is New Zealander Hayley Westenra. This 20 year-old soprano has a magical set of pipes that fits so well with Endless Ocean you would have thought these songs were written for the game.

Endless Ocean features nine songs from the angelic voiced Westenra, all of which are available on iTunes. So for those of you brave enough to put something so pretty on your iPods next to your playlists of illicitly downloaded Swedish death metal, here is a do-it-yourself soundtrack list to make your own Endless Ocean portable listening experience.

"Prayer" (Title track)
"Pokarekare Ana"
"Shenandoah"
"River of Dreams"
"Benedictus"
"Amazing Grace"
"Hine e Hine"
"The Water is Wide"
"E Pari Ra"

The game even has a custom soundtrack feature, letting you create your own aural adventure for ocean exploring. Here are eleven songs The Feed would put on an SD card to make a swimmingly cool Endless Ocean custom soundtrack. In no particular order:

Hanoi Rocks - "Underwater World"
The Beatles - "Octopus’s Garden"
Burning Sensations - "Belly of the Whale"
Mastodon - "Seabeast"
U96 - "Das Boot"
The B-52’s - "Rock Lobster"
Black Sabbath - "Children of the Sea"
The Surf Punks - "Shark Attack"
John Williams - The theme from Jaws
Squirrel Nut Zippers - "Under the Sea"
Bobby Darin - "Beyond the Sea" (Even though it is inextricably linked in our minds to Bioshock)

Now, we want to hear what your custom soundtrack for this scuba diving sim would be. Post your lists and additions in the Comments.

And because more people need to appreciate the brilliance of this 80's One Hit Wonder, ladies and gentlemen, Burning Sensations...
