Concert Review - The Dread Crew of Oddwood at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire

Two years after last seeing them live, today I caught a set from The Dread Crew of Oddwood as they pillaged the stage at the Golden Jubilee of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire. Much like cask aged rum, these pirates get better with each passing year.

The short performance featured several new songs from the Crew's new album, Heavy Mahogany, which having not heard the recorded versions yet, were quite impressive live. It also included a pair of my favourite Oddwood originals, "Ketch Medley" and a raucous rendition of "Cities Burning" to close the show.

What makes an Oddwood performance so fun (beyond the band being dressed as pirates, most of the audience being dressed like pirates and all the songs being piratical in theme) is the energy they bring. I've been to concerts by signed acts at major venues where a band didn't bring an ounce of the energy which I saw The Dread Crew of Oddwood play with today, in scorching heat with non-amplified instruments. And dressed as pirates.

There are still a few weeks of Faire left, so if ye be washed ashore upon the shores of Southern California, get yerself to the Renaissance Pleasure Faire and watch The Dread Crew of Oddwood do what they do best. Commandeering the stage without e'er firing a shot!
