Heavy Metal Supergroup Plays Anime Music... Wait, what?!?

Yes, you read that right. Anime Metal. Animetal-USA. Metal versions of anime music. Just take that in for a moment and bask in the awesome simplicity of the idea. Much music from the anime world is rooted in metal riffage, so it makes utter, perfect sense. But this is no mere group of kids in a garage, thrashing out bad metal covers. The four members of Animetal-USA combined share a pedigree of history and talent which will likely blow your mind as much as it did mine.

Seriously. I still have whiplash from reading the names of the members of Animetal-USA. Ok, some of it might be from headbanging along to their sample song, but I digress

Mike Vescera (vocals) of Obsession and Loudness
Scott Travis (drums) yes, THAT Scott Travis of Judas Priest
Chris Impellitteri (guitar) of Impellitteri, natch
Rudy Sarzo (bass) four-stringer for Ozzy, Quiet Riot, Dio and most recently, Blue Öyster Cult

Ok, now hit play while you continue to read:

You might be wondering why their name is Animetal-USA. There's usually only one reason to hyphenate your country of origin after your band name (see; The English Beat, X-Japan, The Charlatans UK) and that's because of another band that already has that name. Yep, you guessed it, there was already a band called Animetal in Japan.

In fact, their logos are identical, so obviously this is some sort of extension of that currently defunct group. And if you are a deeply knowledgeable headbanger, you likely already noticed the main riff and guitar solo of the song above are note-for-note identical to Accept's "Fast as a Shark". Yeah, I'm not sure what is going on there, but it's awfully fun, especially if you are both a metalhead and an otaku. And just to point out the obvious here, someone really needs to pair these guys on a tour with video game/cartoon metal band, Powerglove.

Two sets of horns way up for the rocker behind @ShredThatAxe for bringing Animetal-USA to my, and now your, attention. Be sure to check out his blog for all things six-string!

  1. Manga is simply the Japanese version of comic books or graphic novels. Many anime series are based on a manga series.9anime.to
