The Official Theme of Summer '12 - The Offspring "Cruising California (Bumpin' In My Trunk)"
While most mainstream publications have declared Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" as this summer's thematic anthem, they obviously decided too soon. Because the real theme song of Summer '12 is by The Offspring.
Sure Carly Rae Jepsen's sugar coated pop single made it to #1, has an insta-hook chorus with a resulting irresistible earworminess to it, but so does "Cruising California (Bumpin' In My Trunk)" from Orange County's The Offspring. A note perfect love letter to the Golden State's glorious summer season. Press play, now.
Yes, the song is ridiculous in an awesome, get-the-party-started-and-don't-let-it-stop kind of way. The surprising use of Auto-Tune is all at once forgivable and makes perfect sense. The Offspring sticks its big toe into the deep end of pop music sheen and it pulls it off admirably. The lyrics are goofy, fun and stick in your brain after a single listen. Both the Ramones and fellow alums of the So Cal punk revival of the 90's, Sublime, get lyric checked. The inclusion of Hip-Hop influenced vocal vamping in the chorus is a big part of the song's charm.
The Visit California office of tourism should drop everything and license this song from The Offspring, because with a couple well placed edits, it has 30 second commercial soundtrack bed written all over it. And even though it likely the song won't top the singles charts or enjoy the level of success as Miss Jepsen's smash, The Offspring are still winners for crafting a song worthy of instant induction onto the ultimate playlist: Songs Celebrating California. Five discs of Mr. Zog's out of five.
