Concert Review - A Night of Music with The Merry Wives of Windsor and The Poxy Boggards

There are certain forms of music which, no matter what mood or state of mind you are in, will always bring a smile to your face and lift your spirits. And much more better is when two groups who perform this particular brand of musical gaiety share the same stage. Such was the performance I along with an enthusiastic crowd of revelers had the pleasure of enjoying last night, when The Merry Wives of Windsor and The Poxy Boggards performed together.

Taking place in the hinterlands far to the north of the kingdom of Los Angeles, this pair of singing groups played extended sets of music to a very enthusiastic crowd as a celebration of the forthcoming Nottingham Festival. Having seen both several times previously, this was the highlight for me; to be able to take in more than the usual 30 or so minutes which they are allotted when playing at the Renaissance Faire.

"How now, good woman? how dost thou?" - a quote from a very good bearded playwright

First up were The Merry Wives of Windsor, who were impressive as always, though perhaps even more so on this evening as they held their own, un-amplified, in a fairly loud room. Audience members closer to the stage likely heard their angelic voices better though. I'd not realized just how long they would be playing and as one song turned into another and another and so on, I because aware we were being treated to a set list which ran the gamut from lovely to bawdy and displayed the depth of the recordings across their five albums.

A drinking group with a singing problem... The Poxy Boggards!

Next up were The Poxy Boggards; a manly group of singing men if there ever was one. A vast swath of the audience were, ahem, properly sauced by this point and things got a bit more rowdy. Let's just say that in nearly three decades of attending concerts, one has never seen a lady (a pair of them actually) act as a microphone stand. I'll just leave that to your wild imagination. The highlight for me personally was hearing The Boggards perform "Greenman Inn," this being one of the stand out tracks, and my personal favorite one, from their new album, Wish You Were Beer, which I can't recommend highly enough to you.

Normally I like to take an abundance of pictures and a few videos to give you a sense of what a concert experience was like. On this evening however, I found myself well and truly swept up by the music of both groups. Ergo I encourage you to be a patron of the arts and take in the music available from both the Wives and the Boggards. And for your further enjoyment and to learn more about these wonderful artists, please check out my interviews with both The Merry Wives of Windsor and The Poxy Boggards!
